Course Description
In this four-hour virtual course, learn how a writer creates engaging murder mystery stories for books and interactive mystery parties.
Topics include:
Creating and maintaining suspense
Keeping the audience guessing
Developing compelling characters
Structuring and working the storyline
Starting with the crime: evidence, witnesses, victims, and suspects
Building believable motives
Interview and interrogation techniques
Using real-life people and cases for inspiration
Describing investigative techniques accurately
Using footnotes and translating computer data output
directing and hosting a fictional murder mystery dinner party
By the end of the class, participants will understand the fundamentals of crafting an engaging mystery and how to turn it into an interactive experience.
Instructor
Ivan E. Weich is a licensed private investigator with extensive experience in both civil and criminal investigations, including public benefits fraud, employment actions, harassment, and discrimination.
He has also worked for a large police agency in Southern California as a detective’s aide, with experience in narcotics, vice, homicide, and robbery investigations.
Ivan holds an Associate’s Degree in Administration of Justice and has attended a Reserve Peace Officer Academy. In addition to his investigative work, he has published a fictional murder mystery and has produced multiple murder mystery dinner parties.
